Volunteer Stats

If you've used the new state reporting site to record your volunteer hours, you may have noticed the countywide and statewide statistics that are displayed on the site.  Beaufort County is doing pretty well, it appears.

There are some 6000 Master Gardeners statewide who are registered on the reporting site.  Beaufort County has around 200, and Jasper County and Colleton County provide even more Master Gardeners as members of the Lowcountry Master Gardener Association.  That's more than 200 volunteers in our organization.
The top reporting county for 2009 is Lexington County, which currently has recorded some 4500 volunteer hours this year, and more than 140 hours so far this month.

Beaufort County is fifth in volunteer hours reported for the year, with more than 2200 hours recorded for 2009 so far.  For these first two weeks of August, Beaufort County has more than 100 volunteer hours recorded...which puts us in third place statewide.

Here's the kicker, though:  as of this writing, all August hours reported on the site came from only 10 Master Gardeners....ten!  This means quite literally that 95% of Beaufort County Master Gardeners have reported 0 hours of volunteer work for August.

We want and NEED you to report your volunteer activities.  We're ready to provide simple instructions and get you started (email Will at
sandlapper64-mastergardeners@yahoo.com);  and even if you should get confused, Will can walk you through the process very easily.  Let's boost these numbers and show the Master Gardeners from across the state how much work we actually do!

LMGA Master Gardeners and Interns are committed to fostering community enrichment, knowledge and enhancement in the areas of horticulture and environment. Through community projects, trained volunteers use and expand their knowledge and share that knowledge with other county residents.   We partner with city and county governments and non-profit organizations for the beautification and preservation of our community in the following areas:

  • Create and maintain demonstration gardens
  • Design and maintain community and school landscapes
  • Conduct school gardening programs
  • Make home gardening visits
  • Plan and complete community beautification projects
  • Present lectures or demonstrations to groups interested in horticulture

We encourage you to participate in any project that interests you regardless of the location

If you have an idea for a new LMGA Project, simply fill out the Project Application Form. All applications will be reviewed to determine if the proposed project is within the scope of the LMGA.  Criteria for selection include:

1) Meets the goals and objectives of the LMGA Mission Statement
2) Provides educational opportunity for LMGA members and the community
3) Teaches good practices and protects the environment
4) Takes place in a public venue, and
5) Provides a fun and rewarding experience to all involved.

The applications must be complete in order to be reviewed by the committee. The applicant will be notified if the project is accepted or rejected. If accepted, a site review with the contact person will be scheduled in a timely manner.  Please note that it is not the intent of approved projects to use the members of the LMGA as a "labor force" but in most cases as an advisory board. Also, the financial responsibility of the project falls upon the applicant as well as the ongoing maintenance of the project upon completion.
