Turf Love began as a pilot in Sun City
November 2008, which ended in March
2009 after serving 213 homeowners. Turf Love is currently
available in limited areas of southern Beaufort County.
Responses from the pilot effort include:
“. . . our lawn
has substantially improved this year since I have followed
your recommendations and the
test results. Also by manually controlling the sprinkler
system and watching the weather forecast I was able to
reduce our water use by 40% during the May/June billing
period compared to last year when the system was on
automatic.” – Al
Beam
“We have followed your program and my
lawn is the best it has ever been. Thanks, I tell anyone who
admires my lawn about your program.” - Dean Cooper
“. . . we have followed your
instructions regarding our lawn. It looks 150% better than
it has ever looked! Thanks so much for providing us with
such a valuable service! The three master gardeners who
came to our home did such a GREAT job reviewing our issues
and providing suggestions. The follow up paperwork gave us
a plan, which we desperately needed. . . .”
-Patricia Swank
“Just
a note to tell you how pleased we are with the report on
your inspection of our lawn. What great information it
contains . . . It is wonderful to know when and what we
should do and not just guess. It is a great service
provided to the residents of Sun City. We are lucky to have
a group of dedicated master gardeners who are willing
to spend their time working on a project like this . . .
Thanks again for this great service.”

Lowcountry Master Gardeners Beautify
Heyward House
Historic Center |
|

Members from the Lowcountry Master Gardener Association (LMGA) are applying their knowledge of southern, coastal gardening by digging in to beautify Bluffton’s Heyward House Historic Center. Once a month these volunteers bring their own tools to prune, plant, rake and hoe the nearly one acre property, a home that dates back to the 1840s. As the official welcome center for the town of Bluffton, the works of these LMGA volunteers ensures that area visitors to the Heyward House are presented with well-kept landscape befitting one of only eight antebellum homes still remaining in Bluffton’s National Register Historic District. In future months, work sessions will be on Thursday starting at 9:00 AM. |

In addition to the efforts at the Heyward House, other recent projects performed by the LMGA members have included planting gardens at the Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head, rejuvenating the gardens at Hilton Head High School and landscaping for Habitat for Humanity in Beaufort. These volunteers also assist the Clemson Extension Service at the plant clinic on Hilton Head Island (Beaufort County Office Building) every Wednesday from 9:30-Noon.
